Clarksdale, Mississippi has a long and tragic history revolving around slavery.
Today's Clarksdale is filled with a loving community who is drowning in a struggling economy. This project aims to create a starter space for locals build their own businesses and rebuild their economy from their very own talents and homes. Individual prefabricated units with a series of kit of parts that can be customized to the needs of the user is designed to provide the optimal user experience. Clients can chose which type of unit they need according to their business. These units can cater towards restaurants, bakeries, fresh produce, all the way to goods like jewelry, books and many more. The units are easily operated as they open and close according to the needs of the occupant, the weather and the function. They can be easily packed and locked up at night, allowing as little movement for the clients as possible.
Furthermore, the site is designed so that it creates a safe community space for the people of Clarksdale. The strong community in Clarksdale lacks space for all age groups to hangout and spend time together. This site, located on the edge of the residences in Clarksdale begins to act as a central hub for people to gather, share their businesses, learn and grow together.
The Clarksdale Market project is a proposal to help start change in Clarksdale, but it is not a permanent solution that will solve everything.
